great watch, great price
For all of you out there thinking that cheap means low quality, you are mistaken. At under $40, this watch is a great bargain. It has solid steel construction, 50m resistance, and runs very smoothly. Quartz movement is very accurate and battery life should last at least a year. In my opinion quartz is a better value than automatic, as battery replacement is infrequent and very cheap anyway. Buy this watch today. It is classy and has performance that should cost double.

Good watch
I bought this watch for my fiance and was pleased when it came in. My fiance also loved the watch. Very happy with the purchase and would consider buying from Armitron in the future. The only thing I wish was different was the box it came in. I was hoping for a nicer box to present it to my fiance, but it came packaged similar to what it would’ve come in from walmart. I guess I didn’t have any reason to think it would’ve been packaged any differently. Overall, it was a nice watch, and my fiance and I were both very happy with it.

Looks and comfort
I looked at a few hundred watches for a simple and basic time/date piece. When it arrived it looked better than the photo. In the photo it appears to be taller than it actually is. It is squarer than the photo, making it a little more masculine.
The band is not too thin or wide and perfectly stitched.
The face picks up light sources and makes it easy to read at many angles, an unexpected plus in dim light. If you like the style you won’t be disappointed.

The Timex Story

The Timex Watch Company

Timex Group B.V. is one of the best-known American watch companies. Timex’s U.S. headquarters are located in Middlebury Connecticut and it has substantial operations in China, the Philippines and India and full scale sales companies in Canada, the UK, France and Mexico.

The company began in 1854 as Waterbury Clock in Connecticut’s Naugatuck Valley, known during the nineteenth century as the “Switzerland of America.” Sister company Waterbury Watch manufactured the first inexpensive mechanical pocket watch in 1880. Great engineered product
I am still in the process of reviewing this product. Here’s what I have so far:

Summary:

Good points:
* Beautiful with dark blue face, white symbols, functional medium blue nylon band;
* Easy to read, even in the dark;
* Easy to use with uncomplicated settings similar to other watches;
* Compact design;
* Measurement consistency is excellent compared to quartz mechanism.

Bad points:
* Difficult to set time (see instruction below);
* Gains 10 seconds a day (consistency); and
* Does not have a manual wind stem.

Discussion
This watch looks great. Unlike other self-winding or kinetic watches, this one is compact. In the best tradition of Japanese product development they thought hard on how this watch should function and say about the wearer. The hands are easy to reading, even for those of use with failing eyesight. The second sweep hand has a read tip allowing easy setting of the time.

Unlike some Japanese product, they provided a short, simple instruction on winding the watch. Here, I am comparing them to Citizen’s ecco-drive watch, which I also own. Just gently work your arm back and forth for three minutes and the self-wind watch will charge; or, you could wear it for a day.

Okay, now for the negatives. First, this is not your quartz watch. The original self-winding mechanism was invented, according to Wikipedia, by a Swiss watchmaker in 1770. Since then it has gone through several improvements but is not as accurate as the quartz mechanism popularized starting in the 1970′s. Sieko warns that this watch could be off by as much as 10 seconds a day. One days use indicates that my watch runs about 10 seconds fast.

The great watchmaker Harrison, who invented the first chronometer accurate enough to track longitude, said that consistency is more important than accuracy. (A poor copy of one of Harrison’s chronometers was carried by Captain Cook on his circumnavigation of the globe. He had nothing but good things to say about it.) I have another self-winding watch, an Armitron, which runs consistently 15 seconds fast on days that I wear it.

From my measurements of quartz watches, their accuracy, while dazzling when compared to old hand-wound watches, are less accurate than my old German pendulum clock. So I am told, the longer the arm, the more stable the swing and the more accurate the timepiece. I compare everything to atomic time. And, because the quartz mechanism is battery-driven, it seems to suffer from inconsistency. I carefully measured my collection of six quartz watches over a 2 year period. While the battery was new, the error was consistent. As the battery burned out, the error became difficult to predict. Sometimes a positive error (adding time) would become a negative error (losing time) as the battery died. This dying period was also hard to predict.

The accuracy of the quartz mechanism is not as good as my pendulum clock. They all lost or gained approximately 2-3 seconds, on average, per month.

Based on a week of measurements with the Armitron, I would say that it is shockingly inaccurate but consistently so. Assuming that the Sieko error continues to be consistently 10 seconds fast this will mean that I will have to reset it every week. This is a small price to pay for an otherwise beautifully crafted and honestly-priced handiwork.

Setting time
The date and day are fairly easy. I suggest turning the watch arms until the click past a day so you won’t be twelve hours off.

Setting the time is another matter. What works best is to set the hour and minute hands, then gently hold the second hand. It should pulse a little as it tries to force itself forward. Once the seconds are accurate, release and the second hand should be accurate. It takes a little practice at first and don’t set the time until you pump the watch 3 minutes to charge the spring.

Time to unwind
It takes about 39 hours (1 test) to unwind.

One out of four
This watch comes in 4 models, SNK 803 with a beige strap and dial, SNK 805 with a green strap and dial, SNK 807 with a blue strap and dial, and SNK 809 with a black strap and dial. What I like most is the red tip on the seconds hand that sweeps continuously across the dial and not in steps for every second like in most analog watches. Also cool is the untraditional numbering of the hour markings, where the 5-minutes are more protruding than the hours. The strap looks better in the photos than in reality, but it’s still very nice and tough-looking, although it is narrower than you think when you see it on the guy’s arm in the pictures above. The see-through case is a gimmick I could do without, but anyway, nice to watch the watch work. Buy all four and you have one to go with every occasion and dress colour/code. This item sells on eBay for 30-40 dollars.

The perfect watch
This is a very special watch in several respects: You can see the clockwork through the transparent backside; both day and date are shown; there is no need for battery changes, nor manual winding up of the clockwork. The strap is solid and washable. I have become very attached to it …

Watch me now…
I’m a little embarrassed that I’m singing about a watch, for crying out loud. Maybe it’s because we all are just craving a little honesty this election year. Anyway, as an old(er) coot, I needed a watch for business (my waning days) and pleasure (hopefully) and being a curmudgeon. This watch is perfect.

The circumference and thickness kind of make you remember older days in watches. The numbers are easy to see against the background (large 4, 8, and 12), and the gold double bars to indicate the other hours are sized perfectly compared to the actual numbers. You can see the watch without reading glasses – at least, I can this year – and I can even make out the day and date without glasses. Whoever designed the face probably has been studying those Golden Ratios, or whatever: there is a pleasing relationship between the circumferences on the face (outer and inner) and the diameters of the outer ring (hours section) and inner circle (most of the day-date, the Citizen logo, and the main whatchamacallit that the hands attach to). The color of the gold is not bright yellow; it kind of grades to the ochre red-gold – certainly a watch for the Beowulf wannabe’s out there (like me). The band is, or was, an alligator-steer genetic fluke, I suppose; reasonably soft. And the color of the band picks up the reddish quality of the metal. It is a very light-weight watch.

Plus, it runs on light, man! Light! (Must have said that during the 60′s sometime….) Pretty cool to think that nobody REALLY knows what’s powering this thing. Never needs a battery – gedoutaheah! Really! If you buy this watch (your own), they could bury you on Mt Everest with your arm sticking up, perhaps with a baggie around it – I don’t know why, and in a thousand generations, your heirs can come by, take the watch, leave the baggie, and use it until the universe…well, whatever it will do.

Do some Amazon reviewers have too much time on their hands? (Clever, no?)

Buy this watch. I prefer the gold/brown: more mythic. You’ll like it.

The Sun’s Time Has Come
When husband needed a watch and his birthday was approaching, I laid my eyes on this one after some research. I love the idea of never needing a battery for a watch. Husband told me that he loves this watch several times since.

For one, it keeps perfect time. He travels all over different time zones and it operates easily. He does have to change the time manually though. For two, no worries about batteries getting weak EVER. It is powered by light, outdoor and indoor as long as there is adequate light. It saves us money for not needing to buy battery for this ever. And it is environmentally friendly since discarded batteries contain toxic chemicals.

One easy recommendation though: Leave it face up when not wearing it to prevent discharge. Hubby only got it discharged once during the first week and it has never happened since we ordered this from Amazon 8 months ago. This could present a minor challenge to some neat freaks who have to put all clutter (keys, watches, wallets, cellphones…) in a drawer or dresser chest. This watch doesn’t like total darkness. It can only move in light, even if just a bit of twilight.

The day&date setting process could be confusing so you have to follow the instruction closely and do it at the right time of the day. It doesn’t glow in the dark – a feature I wish it had.

Couldn’t be more pleased with the purchase. My next watch will also be an eco-drive.

I bought 4 of these for groomsman’s gifts for my wedding. Three out of four will barely take it off. The other will only wear it sparingly because he is afraid to scratch it. The age ranges are from 16 to 33. Maybe this helps if you are considering this as a gift. One thing to consider for bigger guys, go ahead and buy a longer strap the same time you buy the watch. I bought my 4 from a brick and mortar jewelry store so I can’t speak about Amazon’s service in this instance. One thing to note about eco-drives, if you leave them in the dark for extended periods of time (say in a safe deposit box whilst on a year long deployment) it may take up to a week for the capacitor to charge sufficiently.

Back to Basics with Lightweight and Efficient Watch!
This wristband watch in turn fulfills a niche market for active people who want a simple watch! It’s extremely lightweight and is for the sole purpose of telling time – don’t expect much more from it. While training for my first marathon, I wanted a watch to keep track of my pace and time while running outdoors. However, I didn’t need the complexity of a multi-function sports watch with a heart rate meter since those tend to be bulky and distract me from my training. Therefore, I turned to this Breo watch. During my training, it felt very comfortable and could barely feel it on my wrist, since it’s only at 10 grams. Initially it feels a bit loose, but the ridges on the inside of the band help it sit nice and sturdy. I have also swam with this watch with no qualms – feels very natural but not adding any drag resistance. Come race day, the watch was as great a performer as I was! Jokes aside, it felt very natural and kept (accurate) time for the entire 26.2 miles.

Nevertheless, the two complaints I have are i) it does lose time (6-7 minutes) about every other week so you do need to reset it occasionally and ii) the band does feel delicate sometimes especially putting it on and taking it off. Reseting the time is pretty painless, so that shouldn’t be too big of a concern. Other than that, it is a great buy. The price is reasonable at $19.99 since there aren’t many considerable competitors for such a product. Here is a condensed list of the pros and cons:

Stylish, versatile watch
I’m very happy with this watch. The face was a bit larger than I expected, but I’ve gotten used to it. I love the appearance of this watch. The white face and silver band match every outfit. This watch is on the dressier side, but it looks fine with casual clothes too. The only problem I have with it is that the automatic mechanism makes the watch go fast; after a week of wear the watch will be five minutes fast. If reseting your watch frequently would annoy you, I would avoid this watch and other automatic watches in the same price range.

Mine broke about 3 weeks after I bought it. Three of the screws fell loose, the minute hand is broken and the insides started to fall out. I took it into a shop and they said it would cost me $100 for them to repair a watch like this….I just bought the watch for $79!!!
